Zach Krakow, a Special Education major from Grayslake, Illinois, is representing the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater as a student teacher for the spring 2025 semester. Krakow is working in the Special Education programs at Mechanics Grove Elementary, which is part of District 75, and will continue in this role through January 2026.

Krakow is one of 179 UW-Whitewater students placed in regional school districts starting in August. Student teaching is the final requirement for teacher candidates before earning their degree and license.

Throughout the semester, UW-Whitewater will collaborate with 223 cooperating teachers across 175 schools in 117 districts. Student teachers work alongside cooperating teachers on lesson planning, instruction, and assessment.

This fall, 42 UW-Whitewater teacher candidates were hired as student teaching interns through the Department of Public Instruction’s Wisconsin Improvement Program (WIP). These interns are licensed by DPI to teach up to half of each day independently and receive a stipend for their work during the semester.

UW-Whitewater licenses more teachers than any other institution in Wisconsin. The university was founded in 1868 with a mission to educate teachers. More information about the College of Education and Professional Studies at UW-Whitewater can be found at uww.edu/coeps.
