The final yard waste collection for Vernon Hills residents will take place on November 24 or 25, depending on individual garbage pickup schedules. The Village has advised residents not to rake leaves into the street, as this can block storm sewers and increase the risk of neighborhood flooding.

Leaves should be placed in containers marked with an “X” or in kraft paper bags that are tagged with Yard Waste collection stickers. These stickers are available at local home improvement stores, Village Hall, WM, and other area locations. Residents are also encouraged to consider environmentally friendly alternatives such as mulching leaves into their yards or using them as cover for garden beds. Additional information about sustainable yard practices is available on the Village Go Green webpage.

After Halloween, residents looking to recycle pumpkins can participate in composting events hosted by the Vernon Hills Park District on November 6 and at Hawthorn Mall on November 7 and 8. Further pumpkin recycling options are detailed by SWALCO.

A new residential garbage collection contract with WM will start on December 1. Details regarding pricing, services, and how to request service changes can be found on the WM Contract webpage. Homeowners associations that manage waste collection for all members should contact WM’s Michael Brink if they wish to change from twice-weekly to once-weekly service; specific instructions are provided online.
