Jay Swidler, chairman of the Vernon Township Republicans, said that voter participation is critical in the upcoming election and encouraged residents to make their voices heard. He made that statement to Lake County Gazette.
The topic is significant as recent elections have shown shifts in voting patterns across Illinois and the nation. Swidler said, “This primary offers Illinois Republicans a meaningful chance to make their voices heard. Reporting from the Chicago Sun-Times shows that in 2024, President Donald Trump cut the Illinois margin to eight points after previous 17-point losses. Those gains, along with improved results nationwide, suggest that the message of opportunity and accountability is reaching more voters. Republicans can build on that momentum by heading to the polls and casting their ballots.”
After the 2024 election, Illinois Republican leaders pointed to gains by President Donald Trump, who trailed former Vice President Kamala Harris by eight points in the traditionally Democratic-leaning state—an improvement from previous 17-point losses. Illinois GOP Chair Kathy Salvi said the shift reflects growing support among working-class voters. Democrats maintained a supermajority in the Illinois House with 76 seats. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie credited Republican gains to grassroots efforts and said the caucus remains focused on economic growth and anti-corruption, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Early analysis of 2024 presidential election results showed more than 90% of counties with nearly complete reporting shifted toward President Donald Trump compared with 2020. Trump improved his margin in 2,367 counties and lost ground in 240, while 536 counties had insufficient data for analysis. The gains spanned both traditionally Republican areas and some Democratic-leaning counties, including states where former Vice President Kamala Harris was leading, according to The New York Times.
Swidler was first elected chairman of Vernon Township Republicans in 2024. According to the organization’s website, he is “focused on boosting Republican voter turnout, growing the Party’s membership, and communicating the Party’s positions on issues that matter to Vernon Township voters” according to Vernon Township Republicans.
