Waukegan Public Schools’ Bilingual and Multicultural Department, together with the Bilingual Parents Advisory Committee (BPAC), will host the next session in its Academia 60 parent workshop series. The event, titled “Parenting with Love and Logic,” will be led by guest speaker Dr. Sandra Gómez, a psychotherapist.

The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, February 5, 2026, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Families can attend in person at the Brett Theatre at Waukegan High School’s Brookside Campus or join virtually via Google Meet.

According to organizers, the session aims to provide families with practical tools and strategies for building positive relationships and supporting healthy decision-making both at home and in school. “This workshop will provide families with practical tools and strategies to strengthen positive relationships, guide children with empathy, and support healthy decision-making at home and in school,” said Dr. Sandra Gómez.

The district’s student population is predominantly Hispanic (79.5 percent), followed by Black (13.2 percent), White (3.2 percent), and Asian (1.3 percent) students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). According to state data from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), there are 1,014 teachers employed by the district who earn an average salary of $63,524 before pension contributions; most teachers are women (71.1 percent) while men make up 28.9 percent of staff; no teacher has more than ten absences per year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). In fiscal year 2020 the district spent $23,429 per student for a total expenditure of $359 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
