Waukegan school board schedules March meetings; public sessions available online

The Board of Education for Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 will hold its regular monthly micro meeting on March 10, 2026. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Educational Service Center, located at 214 Washington Street. The open session will take place in the Board Room, while the closed session will be held in Room 112.

Following the micro meeting, the Board’s Student Achievement and Operations Services committee meetings are set to begin around 7 p.m., also in the Board Room.

Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 serves Lake County and includes a range of schools such as Andrew Cooke Magnet Elementary School, Carman-Buckner Elementary School, Clearview Elementary School, Daniel Webster Middle School, Early Learning Center, Glen Flora Elementary School, Glenwood Elementary School, Greenwood Elementary School, H.R. McCall Elementary School, Hyde Park Elementary School, Jack Benny Middle School, John S. Clark Elementary School, Little Fort Elementary School, Lyon Magnet Elementary School, Miguel Juarez Middle School, North Elementary School, Oakdale Elementary School, Robert E. According to data from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the district enrolled 15,332 students during the 2019-2020 school year and covers grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade in Waukegan and Lake County (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). The student population is composed of approximately 3.2 percent White students, 13.2 percent Black students, 79.5 percent Hispanic students and 1.3 percent Asian students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

The district employs a total of 1,014 teachers with an average salary of $63,524 before pension contributions; women make up about 71 percent of teaching staff while men comprise roughly 29 percent (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). There are no teachers in the district with more than ten absences in a school year.

Financial records show that Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 spent $23,429 per student in 2020 for a total expenditure of $359 million (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

In terms of attendance challenges during the same period according to ISBE data , there were 3,220 “chronically truant” students—defined as those missing five percent or more of mandated school days without valid excuse—resulting in a chronic truancy rate of about 21 percent compared to a statewide average of just under ten percent (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
