A non-binding referendum will be on the ballot for Lake County residents this November regarding a ban on a statewide property tax.

The decision was made by the Lake County board in August, according to the Chicago Tribune

The question posed to voters will be: “Shall the Illinois General Assembly amend the State Constitution to ban the creation of a new statewide property tax?”

Sandy Hart

Lake County board member Sandy Hart, representing District 13, voiced her hesitation about the issue.

“It’s a clear violation of our rules,” the Tribune quoted her as saying. “There’s been no bill introduced. You’re putting things on the ballot that was taken out of thin air, and I have a real problem with that.”

However, the move had the support of both board members Michael Danforth (District 17) and Judy Martini (District 5).

“This allows constituents a voice," Martini stated. "Let’s give them the opportunity to speak to Springfield. This also speaks to the taxing districts. People are paying enough. Let the voters decide. Democracy works best when you empower voters.”
