ComEd contracts with Corix for Deerfield’s smart meter installation

The village of Deerfield has contracted with Corix to install more than 6,500 smart meters in local households.

The announcement was passed on to the public via David Fitzgerald, a Deerfield analyst.

Consumers are advised that during installation, which lasts approximately 10 minutes, short interruptions to electric power may occur.

Deerfield residents will be informed of the meter installation through U.S. mail, phone calls and hanging door pamphlets.

Citizens should remember that Corix personnel will always carry photo identification and never ask to enter the premises or inquire about payment; occupants can ask technicians for identification.

Commonwealth Edison’s (ComEd) new smart meters are intended to cut costs by skipping the step of reading meters manually. Additionally, the meters will allow for real-time usage data. Thirty days after setup, residents will be mailed welcome materials with information about participating in energy management incentives to help with savings on their monthly utility bills.

Approximately 4 million smart meters, considered to be important building blocks of a reliable smart grid, are scheduled to be installed throughout northern Illinois in 2016.
