The Buffalo Grove Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 9 Oak Creek Drive on July 2 at 5:50 p.m., resulting in one unit becoming uninhabitable in the 18-unit building.

According to a news release, multiple callers reported flames emanating from the roof of the building, prompting an upgrade to the alarm to bring additional assistance to the scene. This upgrade also ensured coverage for other emergency calls in Buffalo Grove.

The release said that the first responding fire crews discovered a fire on the outside roof area of the neighboring building located at 10 Oak Creek Drive, near a third-floor apartment balcony. Firefighters initiated an aggressive attack on the fire, extinguishing it while searching for occupants of the affected third-floor apartment. Additional crews searched the building, checking for hazards and addressing numerous calls for assistance.

The release further noted that the fire was extinguished within 10 minutes. One occupant received treatment and was released at the scene for minor injuries. Fire crews remained on site for another hour, ensuring there were no hidden fires and conducting a fire investigation.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to the release. The fire department reminds residents to have working smoke detectors and practice an escape plan in case of fire.
