Highland Park humanitarian, character award winners to be honored April 20

Highland Park’s 2016 Humanitarian Award winner Alicia de la Cruz  and three dozen “Character Counts” local award recipients will be honored by the Human Relations Commission at an April 20 ceremony.

All winners will accept their awards at 7 p.m. in the Highland Park High School Auditorium, located at 433 Vine Ave.

De la Cruz was chosen by a selection process geared toward recognizing an individual’s outstanding service to the community, consistent giving and level of contribution to local life. 

As an advocate for fair housing, de la Cruz has worked on behalf of immigrants to raise housing standards awareness. She was nominated by Holly Siegel, Tom Koulentes, Pablo Alvarez, Jacquie Denham and Jazmin Santiesteban.

Sharing the spotlight with the 2016 Robert Barnard Character Counts Pillar Awards will be a total of 36 individuals. The six pillars of character are defined as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.

This year’s recipients include Ron Abrams, Adam Abreu, Andrea Amend, Cecilia Batt, Rebecca Breitstein, Nick Castelli, Charlie Cederberg, Alix Eisenberg, William Gimbel, Sebastian Gosk, Darren Gussis, Samuel Hollander, Barbara Ross Jacobson, Audrey Jennings, Jamie Kaufman, Sophia Labedz, Gabrielle Levenson and Cecelia Limon.

Additionally, the list includes Tyler Margulis, Dresden Martin, Diana Martinez, Don Miner, Namrita Narula, Nicholas Rankin, Abby Reinstein, Margarite Richardson, Sam Rohn, Hannah Sanderman, Larry Sassorossi, Joey Sereda, Arda Sonmez, Danny Springman, Lisa Temkin, Isabella Williams, Carol Wolfe and Lucas Wolk.
