Gurnee Park District issued the following announcement on June 25.
Since 2014, the sport of pickleball continues to be one of the fastest growing sports. Why? The sport can be played at any age at a variety of skill levels.
I was first introduced to the game in 2016 at FitNation Gurnee's health fair. I signed up for a time slot with a few friends and we learned the basics. Overall, the rules were very easy to learn and relatable to badminton or tennis. From there, I continued to play at Fitnation and go to open pickleball at Hunt Club Park Community Center. Below are a couple sites that helped us learn the rules.

-Pickle-Ball Inc. - https://www.pickleball.com/rules-how-to-play-pickleball-s/106.htm
Beyond being easy to learn, here are a few more benefits:
Change up your exercise routine
For me, playing pickleball two to three times a week is another form of physical activity and a fun way to switch up the workout routine. Pickleball is the perfect way to socialize, while being active.
Be social
I enjoy playing with our group of ten, including friends and family members. In addition, it is a great opportunity to meet people throughout the community.
Choose to compete or play for fun
There are plenty of local tournaments, open play and recreational teams to choose an athletic environment that matches your skillset. If you're new, consider attending an open pickleball session. Veteran players are always willing to share tips and teach the game.
Play indoors or outdoors
Gurnee Park District provides plenty of places to play. Both indoor and outdoor options. Courts are lined indoors at Hunt Club Park Community Center's gymnasium and FitNation Gurnee's Flex Studio. If you prefer to take it outside, Betty Russell, Christine Thompson, Viking Park and Hunt Club Park have courts available.
Don't have equipment? It's available to rent from Viking Park and Hunt Club Park Community Center.
Indoor Pickleball Locations:
- Hunt Club Park Community Center (gym lined for pickleball)
- FitNation Nations Drive (Flex Studio lined for pickleball)
- Betty Russell Park (Tennis courts lined for pickleball)
- Christine Thompson Park (pickleball court only)
- Hunt Club Park (basketball court lined for pickleball)
- Viking Park (Tennis courts lined for pickleball)
Pickleball is truly a forever sport that every age and ability can enjoy. It's a great way to combine exercise, meet new people and stay active. Even if you're new to the game, it's a fun experience to see the progression the more you play!
