Antioch's Chase Becker bulks up, hopes to play football, run track in college

Chase Becker is proud to have earned the right to have options.

After recently gaining 30 pounds, the Antioch two-sport star best known for placing eighth last year in the Class 3A Discus Throw is now as coveted in football as he is in track and field.

Becker is hoping to take full advantage of his newfound notoriety after bulking up to 215 pounds and capturing the eye of several Division II programs.

“I’m hoping to play football and track in college,” Becker told the Chicago Tribune. “It’s nice to have choices.”

Becker is one of five starters returning to a defense that pitched two shutouts and allowed more than 14 points just three times during last season’s 9-1 Northern Lake County winning campaign.

Coach Brian Glashagel hints he expects even more from his senior star this season.

“Chase is getting a lot of interest and loves playing football and track,” he said. “He will have a lot of choices soon.”

Becker believes the Sequoits’ defense will be even more dominant this season with former Lake Zurich coach David Proffitt now calling the shots as the new defensive coordinator.

“We changed up the defensive line, which is now played by faster middle linebacker-type players,” Becker told the Tribune. “Besides that, he’s very focused on us and what we like and feel comfortable with. He brings a lot of knowledge when it comes to changing the small fundamental things, which has helped us drastically.”

With the Sequoits having won 19 of their last 21 games over two seasons, Becker said the team’s bottom-line approach won’t be changing too much.

“As a team, our goals are to win one game at a time,” he said. “We can’t get ahead of ourselves and become too comfortable, which will hopefully lead us to another conference title and our goal of a state championship.”
