Deerfield School District 109 recently issued the following announcement.
Below is important information for all families about getting to and from school.
Safety Reminders from the Deerfield Police: The Deerfield Police Department, in partnership with Deerfield School District 109, want all students, parents and guardians to focus on safe travels on the first day of school – and throughout the school year. We ask all to follow all traffic laws in and around school zones:
- Handheld cellphone use is prohibited while driving
- Watch your speed
- Obey stop signs and red lights
- Pay attention to bus stop arms
Bus Routes Posted: All routes are now posted online. Visit the the Transportation web page to view the 2018-2019 bus routes. Your child should go to the bus stop closest to your home.
Bus Passes: All riders who live in the free transportation area, as well as those who have paid for transportation, will receive a bus pass from school within the first two weeks school. In early September, we will send an email to let you know the date when students MUST have their bus pass in order to ride the bus.
Timing & Patience: In the mornings, we ask that you have your child at his or her bus stop at least 10 minutes before the scheduled time in case routes are running ahead of schedule. In the early days of school, please be patient as the drivers work through the routes. And, please view your routes nightly to check for changes. We will email families when there are significant route changes.
Buckle Up: All of the school buses that transport District 109 students to and from school each day, and on field trips throughout the year, are equipped with seat belts. All of our large school buses have lap belts, and the small buses either have lap belts or three-point harness belts (with shoulder straps). Please talk to your child about the importance of wearing a seatbelt while riding the school bus daily to and from school, on field trips, and to and from activities and special events. Here are some instructions on buckling up. Note that a lap belt should fit low across your child's hips, and tightened so there is no looseness, but isn't squeezing the body.
Bus Stop Change Requests: If you believe there is a safety hazard at your child’s current assigned bus stop, you can submit a bus stop change request by completing this form. After you complete the form, send any supporting documentation (maps, photographs, etc.) to the Transportation Department at transportation@dps109.org. Please understand that during this time of year, it may take several days for the Transportation Department to review requests and to respond.Drop-off Procedures for Kindergarten Bus Riders: Bus drivers will not drop off kindergarten students at a stop unless an adult is present. (If your school also requires an adult at pick up of first graders, the principal will communicate that information to you.)
Ride that Bus! We strongly encourage all families whose children are bus riders to use this service as often as possible. It’s the safest form of transportation, and will cut down on traffic in and around schools, further increasing safety for students, staff and parents.
