Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 issued the following announcement on Jan. 23.
Waukegan High School Junior, Austin Cantu was officially sworn in as Waukegan Public Schools’ new Student Board Member on January 22.
Austin replaces Raven May, who has completed her year-long term as the District’s first-ever Student Board member. Austin’s term as a non-voting member will run through January 2020.
Austin is a student at the Washington Campus, where he is heavily involved in the music program. He plays trumpet for the award-winning Waukegan High School Marching Band, and is a member of the school’s jazz-inspired Bulldog Big Band and Bulldog Lab Band. Austin also plays French Horn in the school’s Symphonic Band.
Austin has attended WPS60 schools since kindergarten. He attended Whittier, Little Fort and Clearview elementary schools, and Juarez Middle School.
In the community Austin is well-known for running the Art Park in downtown Waukegan. Austin also participates in the monthly ArtWauk events downtown, where he showcases his photography.
As a student Board Member, Austin says he is most looking forward to making schools more welcoming, and ensuring Waukegan and its schools can be a source of pride for students.
As part of the position, Austin will be given time on each School Board agenda to speak regarding student concerns, curriculum, and activities. He will act as a liaison between the students and school board, gather student concerns and celebrations in a variety of ways, and help communicate important information from the School Board to students.
