Illinois state's income tax deadline has been extended by three months to July 15.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced on March 25 that state taxes do not need to be filed for three more months, changing the deadline from April 15 to July 15. But the Department of Revenue (IDOR) will still be processing refunds to those who file their taxes ahead of the new deadline.

“I’m pleased the Governor acted on the Senate Republican’s request to extend the state income tax filing and payment deadline during this unprecedented time of challenge for citizens of Illinois and the nation," Sen. Craig Wilcox (R-McHenry) said in a statement.

Wilcox said in his statement the federal government delayed the deadline for federal tax filing, so he felt it was only fair that the state's tax filing deadline also be extended.

"The delay will help Illinois citizens maintain the recommended social-distancing practices while also easing their concerns about taxes owed. Extending the deadline is a simple act, but it will make a big difference for many people," Wilcox said.

The IDOR said that 3.4 million residents of Illinois have already finished and filed their income taxes. More than 72% of those who have filed expect a refund this year as well, the IDOR told WIFR.

Last year, there were 6.3 million income taxes filed and 88% of those received a refund, IDOR said.

The fastest way to file taxes is electronically and it is also the most secure way, WIFR reported. If an individual wants to check on their return, they can visit Where's My Refund? for a status update.

Pritzker also announced that unemployment insurance would be expanding to include those without paid sick leave or aren't able to work due to the coronavirus and that new emergency assistance programs will be able to help small businesses during this time, WIFR reported.

Other programs announced were a small business stabilization program and an emergency grant program for the hospitality business.
