MUNDELEIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISTRICT 75: Family Update April 13, 2020

Family

Mundelein Elementary School District 75 issued the following announcement on April 13.

Dear Mundelein District 75 Parents,

I hope you all are doing well! As we prepare for this week’s learning, teachers are excited to begin connecting with students in different ways. In addition to our e-learning cycles, teachers will be reaching out to students at least once a week via phone or video conferencing software.

District 75 has decided to use Google Hangouts Meet (GHM) as the platform for class meetings. Google Hangouts Meet will be available through Google Classroom or Seesaw and meets the requirements of the Child Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

Depending on grade level, video conference sessions may be individual, small group or whole group. In many cases, a class meeting format will be used to allow each child in a homeroom or classroom to log into the video conference simultaneously. This will enable students to connect with their teacher and classmates, maintaining those important relationships. Teachers will be scheduling phone or video conferencing through Google Classroom (grades 5-8) or Seesaw (PreK-4th grade) beginning this week.

In addition, some teachers may start using these face-to-face meetings to give students the ability to ask questions about their learning or to review specific topics. Teachers have been asked to record these sessions whenever instruction occurs on Google Hangouts, so the recording can be posted on their Google Classroom or Seesaw; ensuring all students have access to the session. Both of these platforms are only open to students and parents who have been previously approved. This enables us to maintain privacy of the students and teachers involved.

We’ve created guidelines for these sessions for you to review with your child(ren) prior to their first meeting. These guidelines, as well as other supporting materials, can be found on our Student E-Learning Hub, which can be accessed through the district’s website at district75.org.

Google Hangouts Meet links are intended for educational uses only. As always, it is important for families to monitor student use of technology when they are not engaged in school work.

I personally appreciate the work you are doing at home. I know that it is a huge task, and it can feel daunting. As we all continue to work together, we will see this unprecedented time through to healthy success. We will all stay strong and together - Mundy Strong!

Gratefully,

Dan Swartz

Assistant Superintendent of Teaching & Learning
