ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 53: Walker Highlights Welcoming Center Resources Available Remotely for Immigrant Families

53

Illinois State House District 53 issued the following announcement on May 15

State Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is encouraging immigrant families in need of assistance during the COVID-19 crisis to reach out to one of Illinois’ Welcoming Centers, which are working remotely and are designed to help immigrants navigate the state’s human services delivery systems.

“This health crisis is difficult for all of us, but it can be even more intimidating if you are an immigrant and are unfamiliar with how to access state resources,” Walker said. “Thankfully, we do have Welcoming Centers that are available to assist families remotely and through a variety of different languages.”

Illinois Welcoming Centers are working remotely during the health crisis and can help connect immigrant families with resources including SNAP, WIC, TANF and other public benefits. They can also provide information on COVID-19 testing locations and how to access medical resources. For a list of Welcoming Centers, contact information and available languages, please visit http://www.dhs.state.il.us/page.aspx?item=118709.

“This pandemic is taking an incredible toll on families, and I want to make sure that anyone who needs assistance and qualifies for it is able to access it,” Walker said. “As lawmakers return to Springfield, I look forward to working to preserve critical services that families need access to.”
