Illinois State House District 53 issued the following announcement on May 24
State Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, issued the following statement Friday after working to balance the state budget and provide critical resources to families affected by COVID-19:
“In the midst of a crisis not seen in our lifetimes, I worked to pass a responsible budget that invests in our doctors, first responders and other essential workers. I supported a balanced approach that understands the economic challenges our state faces, while prioritizing the critical services families depend on.
“Of note, the bipartisan budget plan I backed provides needed funding for resources for families facing layoffs and furloughs, and increases funding for public health, particularly for COVID-19 testing and other local health services. I also worked to provide additional legislative oversight of state spending during this unprecedented time.
“Working across the aisle, and with the support of business and labor groups, I worked to provide additional care for first responders, nurses and other essential employees who have contracted COVID-19 on the job. I voted to provide immediate relief for property taxpayers, by suspending late payments and tax sales, and ensuring seniors, veterans and individuals with disabilities do not have to reapply for their exemptions.
“There is no question that Illinois will continue to face significant challenges due to COVID-19, but I am confident that this budget plan will help us focus our resources where they need to go and will help families through this difficult time. More work remains, and I look forward to working with colleagues on both sides of the aisle to take the action needed to fully respond to this health and economic crisis.”
