Illinois State House District 53 issued the following announcement on July 6
State Rep. Mark Walker, D-Arlington Heights, is encouraging residents to complete their state and federal tax filings in advance of the July 15 deadline, which was initially pushed pack from its usual date in April due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
“These last few months have been hectic, and while I’m glad deadlines were pushed back, it’s important to remember the tax filing deadline is fast approaching,” Walker said. “I encourage residents to follow IRS recommendations and use electronic filing options in an effort to support social distancing and speed up the processing of tax returns, refunds and payments.”
The Illinois Department of Revenue’s offices are now open, but the agency encourages taxpayers to contact them via phone at 1-800-732-8866 or 217-782-3336. More contact information, online filing links and resources are available at tax.illinois.gov. Resources and free online filing methods for a federal return are available at irs.gov.
As of June 26, the Illinois Department on Aging estimated that 25% of people age 65 and above still needed to file their 2019 income taxes.
“It may be worthwhile to check in on a parent or older adult you know to make sure they know the deadline is coming soon,” Walker said. “Sometimes tax returns take time to work through, and I encourage people to take advantage of the remaining time to get their questions answered and work through any potential hurdles.”
