With no hope of playing football during senior year, student dies by suicide

After news came to light about the death of a Glenbrook North High School senior by suicide, more news broke that the football season that was originally postponed might not happen after all.

Emma Woodhouse confirmed Dylan Buckner’s death on Twitter, sharing a statement from Glenbrook North Principal Jason Markey where he shared the news and noted that his thoughts were with Buckner’s family and friends.

One mother said Gov. J.B. Pritzker had initially just postponed the season, saying it would be played in the spring, but now that is up in the air.

“I have a senior,” Christine Fenlon replied. “I watch him daily. This scares the crap out of me. We are learning that the new fall season starting in a month now might not happen. These kids have been holding their breath. For what? Pritzker doesn’t care. He has no end game. He makes me sick.”

Another parent replied saying she was also worried about her child.

“I couldn’t even answer my sophomore tonight who had hope for football starting in a month,” the user replied. “How do I even tell him that Pritzker put another 150 day order in and has no intention of allowing any sports in Illinois. This governor is unreal!!!”

Chris Buckner, Dylan Buckner’s father, said his son had been battling depression for several years, but once COVID-19 sent the state into a lockdown, his depression worsened.

Glenbrook North Head Coach Matt Purdy said Dylan Buckner was a wonderful student, friend, leader and athlete. He urged those needing it to seek help.

"Parents, go and hug your kids, and kids tell your parents you love them," Purdy told NBC 5 Chicago. "These are the toughest of times right now for everyone, and the best thing we can do is support each other and let people in our lives know how much they are valued and loved. That’s what Dylan would do."
