State Rep. Tom Weber (R-Lake Villa) announced that he voted against the Democrats’ 102nd General Assembly House rules.
He explained several reasons why.
For one, Weber wanted term limits put into legislation to keep the next assembly from easily dropping them.
“The Democrats are proud that they put term limits into the rules,” he said. “However, if they were serious about it, they would put it in legislation, because in the next general assembly, when they create their rules, they can change it. So, it is not set in stone and I would like to see that.”
Weber also discussed that there should be a guarantee that bills will be discussed and voted on to give lawmakers an opportunity to speak on behalf of their constituents.
“They promised that all bills filed will be dedicated to committees but there is no guarantee that those bills will be heard for a vote,” Weber continued. “So, what I was really hoping for in these rules were something that would empower the voters of Illinois, something that would give them a voice.”
Weber further emphasized that it is vital to hear the voices of Illinoisans.
“We have a very diverse state, the things that are important in the district that I represent may not be the same as (for) someone who represents Chicago or in Southern Illinois. The people’s voice in my opinion is still being hushed and I think that those things need to be addressed.”
