Dear Editor,
Coupled with the Governor’s tax hikes, SB 72 would bring soaring litigation costs
that threaten to wipe out thousands of small businesses in Illinois. As a member of
NFIB, the largest small business association in the United States, I can say
definitively that thousands of businesses are in jeopardy and even more livelihoods
are on the line if the Governor signs SB 72, and we strongly encourage him to veto
the bill.
The COVID-19 recovery in Illinois has been slow, thanks in part to an increasingly
anti-business environment. Now, with vulnerable small business owners facing
myriad lawsuits from which they are unprotected, SB 72 threatens to force even
more concessions—in the form of high interest rates—which could put them under
for good.
Luckily, HB 3360 was vetoed by Governor Pritzker earlier this year, but right now,
legislators are focused on directing hefty court winnings to benefit government
agencies instead. All this does is keep money out of the hands of hardworking
Illinoisans in order to subsidize more bureaucracy. The Governor must protect
businesses and veto SB 72 immediately.
