Village of Lake Zurich issued the following announcement on Aug. 1

There is palpable optimism around Lake Zurich these days as this community of suburban ideals shifts into high-gear as the post-pandemic recovery continues.

The Village has made exciting progress towards its strategic goals, carefully utilizing the limited resources available.

Despite the challenges of the last 1 ½ years, the long-term financial planning of the Village, coupled with the strength of the local economy and private-sector investment, has put Lake Zurich on solid footing for the future.

Mayor Tom Poynton recaps the recent successes, saying “together we have made important strides in making Lake Zurich a better community. It has certainly been challenging and there is no question that we have been tested but working as a community of friends and neighbors, we have not succumbed to the negative. Instead we have shown that Lake Zurich continues to prosper as a community of friends and families."

What follows is a recap of some of the recent successes the Village of Lake Zurich is proud of.

Several construction projects are progressing ahead, including a big injection of vitality in the Main Street District.

Life Time Fitness Targets October 2022

The most notable project back underway is Life Time Fitness at the corner of Old Rand and Route 12, which has resumed construction on its $30 million development after COVID mitigations forced health clubs across the country to close their doors. Lifetime is expected to be open around mid-October 2022.

New Housing Options Break Ground

  • National homebuilder Ryan Homes is building nine townhome buildings called Canterbury Estates on three acres just south of the Lake Zurich Main Street District. These 38-units are expected to run from the high $200,000s to the mid $300,000s, with plans to open sales as early as Fall 2021.

  • The Sanctuary of Lake Zurich is breaking ground at the northwest corner of the lakefront to construct a mixed-use development with 23 townhome units in three buildings along the waterfront, in addition to a commercial building with space for two businesses, including a new restaurant.  The luxury units are expected to have price points starting in the upper $500,000s.

  • Lake Zurich newest subdivision, the 35-home Avery Ridge on North Midlothian Road is well-underway, adding about 20 acres into the formal Lake Zurich village boundaries. Residents of the new subdivision will have six styles of homes to choose from and houses are already being sold.

Main Street Gets Boost of Vitality

  • A redevelopment agreement in the Main Street TIF District was approved by the Village Board in July 2021 for the sale and redevelopment of village-owned properties near the corner of Old Rand Road and Main Street.   The owners of Lake Zurich Florist on Main Street intend to build a new 2-story mixed-use building containing 4 commercial tenant spaces on the first floor and 4 residential units on the second floor. This redevelopment will result in more revenue for the TIF district, fewer village-owned properties, and additional vibrancy in the heart of Lake Zurich.

  • Another big win for Main Street is the redevelopment of the former Bank of America building, this one headed by local Lake Zurich residents.  Vault 232 is moving forward with a total renovation of this high-end dining establishment that will include a banquet space, bar area, and fresh seafood retail store. Vault 232 has now leased 100% of this nearly 10,000 square feet building, which promises to be another Lake Zurich dining destination.  Vault 232 on Main is expected to be open by the end of 2021.

  • Main Street Lake Zurich has also scored big with Blue Ridge Korean BBQ, another large renovation project that is now underway on a property (Block A) that was village-owned prior to the Village Board selling it to a small-business restauranteur who is moving his Blue Ridge restaurant from Park Ridge to Lake Zurich.

New Businesses Choose Lake Zurich

  • Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen is close to opening at 742 South Rand Road, which has moved into the former Pizza Hut location in front of Wal-Mart after an extensive renovation project of the site, giving the Lake Zurich community yet another choice in diner flavor.  Popeye’s is expected to open in late summer / early fall 2021.

  • Papagus Gyros Moves into New Home: The Village issued a final occupancy permit to Papagus Gyros to begin operating at its new location at 1110 South Old Rand Road. This space was formerly occupied by the Pizza Factory of Lake Zurich. Papagus was formerly located at 454 North Rand Road until 2018 when it sold the property to Life Time to accommodate the new facility that is currently under construction.

  • Andy’s Deli is moving forward with construction of a modern looking European-style restaurant at the site of the former Joe’s Barber Shop at 265 North Rand Road, which is being demolished to clear the way for yet another culinary option for Lake Zurich to enjoy.  Andy’s Deli is expected to open in 2022.
New Multi-Million Dollar School Set to Open

The brand new multi-million-dollar May Whitney Elementary School at 100 Church Street is almost ready to welcome students this fall. The new two-story cutting-edge elementary facility comes complete with a new soccer field, basketball court, playgrounds, and reconfigured parking lot and drop-off area for vehicles and buses.

A ribbon cutting for the new school is set for the first week of August.
