Meadowlark Park and Arboretum
Dedication Ceremony
Mayor Dominick DiMaggio and the Village Board of Trustees are proud to announce the grand opening outdoor dedication ceremony of the Meadowlark Park and Arboretum on Monday, October 11, at 4:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
The park is located at 188 Meadowlark Drive, at the intersection of West Schwerman Road, within the Lake Lorraine Estates subdivision.
Meadowlark Park and Arboretum is a new 3.5-acre park site, featuring an interactive playground comprised of five ADA compliant play pods, which depict the historical land use of Hawthorn Woods in a Legacy of the Land Tour. This tour includes a Glacial Deposit Outdoor Classroom, Wetland Habitat Play Area, Woodland Forest Play Pod, Industrial Modernization Gravity Glide, and an Honoring Our Agricultural Heritage Picnic Grove.
Meadowlark Park and Arboretum also includes a diverse treescape designed in conjunction with the Morton Arboretum, a 2.5-acre sustainable pollinator meadow habitat, walking trail, a rustic style “Little Library” donated by the Rotary Club of Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer and Long Grove, educational signage, along with picnic tables and park benches throughout. The park is open year-round between sunrise and sunset, accessible to all mobilities.
This dedication ceremony marks the much-anticipated completion of a 5-year park design and implementation process. Funding and guidance were provided by the following organizations: Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR)/Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development (OSLAD); Morton Arboretum; America in Bloom/Canadian National Railway; Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation; Chicago Regional Tree Initiative; and the Rotary Club of Hawthorn Woods, Kildeer and Long Grove. The Village of Hawthorn Woods would like to whole-heartedly express our gratitude to these important organizations and agencies for their support throughout this recreational and environmentally sustainable endeavor.
We look forward to seeing you at the Meadowlark Park and Arboretum outdoor dedication ceremony!

Village News
An Update From Mayor Dominick DiMaggio
Village Of Hawthorn Woods Named
Second Safest City In Illinois For 2021
The Village of Hawthorn Woods is pleased to have been named the Second Safest City in the State of Illinois for 2021, according to Safewise.
Safewise is a company that rates home security systems. According to the ranking, the safest city in the state is Compton Hills, a village west of Chicago, located in Kane County.
The remaining nine cities in the top 10, in order, were Hawthorn Woods, Inverness, Lindenhurst, Elburn, Orland Hills, Chester, Lake in the Hills, Gilberts, and Huntley.
The ranking involved the analysis of FBI crime statistics and data, including violent crime rates and property crime rates, and analyzed only cities with a population over the state's median.
"With an award-winning, professional, and dedicated Police Department, the Village of Hawthorn Woods is proud to be recognized as a leading community prioritizing safety and security for its residents, local businesses, and visitors," stated Pamela O. Newton, Chief Operating Officer.
Local High School Students Participate In Adopt-A-Highway Program
On Sunday, September 12, nine students from Adlai Stevenson High School (pictured here), who are also residents of the Hawthorn Trails subdivision, spent the entire morning clearing trash and recyclable materials along Quentin Road through the Lake County Adopt-A-Highway Program.
The Village of Hawthorn Woods would like to applaud the students’ volunteer efforts in keeping our roadsides clean. We are so very grateful for your service to our community!
If you are interested in coordinating a group to “sign-up and clean-up” our roadsides, please contact Brian Sullivan at bsullivan@vhw.org or (847) 847-3514.

New Village Trustee Appointment
At the July 26th Village Board Meeting, Mayor Dominick DiMaggio appointed Hawthorn Woods resident, Cathy Bayer, to fill a vacant Trustee seat on the Village Board. Cathy has been a resident of Hawthorn Woods for over seventeen years and lives with her family in the Acorn Acres subdivision, where she serves as president of the homeowners association. She has also served on the Village’s Planning, Building, and Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals.
Cathy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. She worked in the areas of recruitment and human resources for over fifteen years before becoming a stay-at-home mom.
“When a trustee position became available and the Mayor asked if I would be interested in taking on that role, I was truly honored,” Cathy stated. “While we often talk about federal and state issues that are covered on the news, I believe our own neighborhood and local community issues can really make as much of, and oftentimes, more of an impact on our daily lives. It is a privilege to represent the community of families I have come to know in my 17+ years as a resident and I aim to be a positive contributor in the continued development of the Village of Hawthorn Woods, while maintaining the small town feel that we all appreciate.”
