Dr. Brian Schmisek Appointed Provost at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary
We are excited to announce Dr. Brian Schmisek is the new Provost at the University of Saint Mary of the Lake/Mundelein Seminary (USML) as of September 6, 2022.
Dr. Schmisek has over 25 years of educational and professional experience in Catholic higher education including Provost and Dean of Faculties at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota, Dean and Professor of the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University in Chicago, and the Founding Dean of the School of Ministry at The University of Dallas. He is an experienced and successful academic leader with a reputation for advancing mission and growing programs.

His wide range of experience in Catholic higher education administration will prove invaluable as we continue to strive for better integration of the seminary with the diaconal and lay ministry programs at the university. USML is well poised to meet the multifaceted needs for parish ministry leadership formation and Brian is exceptionally well qualified to help direct that mission,” states Fr. John Kartje, Rector, and President of USML.

The University plays a critical role in the life of the church and will continue to grow in that role and in Catholic higher education more broadly,” said, Dr. Schmisek.
A North Dakota native, Dr. Schmisek is also a published scholar and an award-winning author who writes materials accessible to lay audiences while being rooted in solid theological and biblical scholarship.
Dr. Schmisek earned his Ph.D. in Biblical Studies from The Catholic University of America. In addition, he holds an M.A (Classics) from The University of Mississippi and an M.A. (Theology) from The Catholic University of America. His B.A. is from North Dakota State University.
Dr. Schmisek and his wife, Marnie, have four adult children.
