“I’m in the northwest of Syria with Syrian American Medical Society. It is heartbreaking here. So much destruction. Lots of crush injuries, fractures and amputations. Many orphans. Lots of kids don’t know their parents are dead. Other survivors don’t know what happened or can’t find their family members. We’re operating and consulting, but barely scratching the surface.”Samer Attar, MD, a Northwestern Medicine orthopaedic surgeon, is in Syria providing emergency surgical care after two powerful earthquakes devastated the area on February 6. Traveling with the Syrian American Medical Society, his team performed more than 20 surgeries during their first day.Northwestern Medicine is coordinating a shipment of much-needed medical supplies to the area.To make a monetary donation to relief efforts in Turkey and Syria, please consider Project C.U.R.E.
