Motorists and passengers in Lake County are being urged to fasten their seatbelts as the Sheriff's Office intensifies its enforcement efforts. The campaign, which commenced a week prior to Memorial Day, seeks to remind drivers of the "Click It or Ticket" initiative.

According to a press release from Sheriff John Idleburg's office, the implications of neglecting to wear a seatbelt or wearing it incorrectly are unambiguous. In 2022, Illinois recorded 300 fatalities involving unrestrained passengers.

The "Click It or Ticket" campaign is financed by federal highway safety funds, administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), as per the same press release from Lake County Sheriff's Office.

Nationally, it is estimated that 91.9% of people use seatbelts. However, Illinois boasts a slightly higher compliance rate at 93%, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office press release.
