This summer, caution is advised when spending time on or in waterways due to the potential presence of harmful algal (cyanobacteria) blooms in any body of water.

To avoid contact with potentially harmful waters, look for the following signs:

- Water that resembles spilled green or blue-green paint

- Presence of surface scums, mats, or films

- Blue or green crusts at the shoreline

- Discolored water or green-colored streaks

- Greenish globs suspended below the water's surface

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also recommends keeping pets away from water that may contain cyanobacteria. Pets should not drink from, swim in, or lick their fur after being exposed to such water.
