Lake County Sheriff's deputies, joined by Mundelein Police officers, successfully de-escalated a situation on Tuesday where a man was threatening neighbors with a knife. Deputies responded to the call at approximately 9:55 a.m. on June 11.

"Yet again, our staff utilized patience, time, and de-escalation techniques to bring a violent situation to a safe resolution, without the need to use force. Great job to everyone involved in this incident, from our sheriff’s emergency telecommunicators to our deputies who responded," Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg said, according to a Lake County Sheriff's Office press release. "Thank you to Mundelein Police Department for their response and assistance."

According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office press release, deputies were dispatched to the 26200 block of North Route 83 in unincorporated Mundelein following reports of a man armed with a knife threatening neighbors. The man went to a neighbor's house, started shouting, and began stabbing its door with a knife. As deputies arrived on the scene, the suspect retreated into his home.

Mundelein Police officers arrived to assist the deputies and provide Spanish translation. The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Luis Maganda-Chino, only spoke Spanish. Deputies and officers continued speaking with Maganda-Chino for more than an hour before he was convinced to leave his home and surrender. He was taken into custody without incident. Deputies seized several knives.

Maganda-Chino was transported to the Lake County Jail. He was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest following the incident. Additionally, he was charged on an active warrant for violating an order of protection. He is being held pending First Appearance Court. All defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
