The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal is reminding Illinois residents to adhere to proper safety practices when using grills during the upcoming July 4th holiday and throughout the summer. July is identified as the peak month for grill fires, followed by June, May, and August.
To ensure a safe grilling season, several steps are recommended:
- Propane and charcoal grills should only be used outdoors.
- Grills should be placed away from homes or deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches.
- Children and pets should be kept at least three feet away from the grilling area.
- Regularly clean grills by removing grease or fat buildup from both the grills and trays below.
- Never leave a grill unattended.
- Always ensure gas grill lids are open before lighting.
- Check propane gas tanks and hoses for leaks before each use.
- If gas is smelled while grilling, immediately move away from the grill and contact the fire department.
- Ensure charcoal grill coals are cool before disposing of them in a metal container.
- Keep a fire extinguisher, bucket of water, or garden hose nearby or know where one can be accessed quickly.
