Illinois drivers will soon have the option to renew their driver's licenses for either four or eight years, thanks to legislation sponsored by State Senator Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods). The bill, signed into law on August 9, mandates that the Secretary of State develop rules for this new process by January 1, 2027. Motorists must be given the four-year or eight-year option no later than July 1 of that same year.
“Most people do not relish spending time at the DMV, and this new law will provide relief to most drivers,” said McConchie. “It brings Illinois more in line with other states with regard to the length of time drivers licenses remain valid and will decrease problems motorists experience when they try to schedule appointments at their local driver services facility.”
The bill received unanimous approval in both the Senate and House. The cost of an eight-year license will be $60, which is double the cost of a four-year license.
