Illinois State Rep. Tom Weber (R-IL-65) has introduced legislation to alleviate funding delays experienced by home delivery meal programs for seniors.
The new bill, HB 5911, would reallocate $25 million from migrant centers to support the Home Delivered Meals Program.
This measure aims to ensure that vulnerable seniors will continue receiving essential services such as Meals on Wheels.
The Illinois Home Delivered Meals Program provides meals to individuals 60 and up who are unable to prepare meals for themselves due to physical or cognitive limitations.
The program is funded by federal, state, and local resources, including contributions from participants. It is administered by the Illinois Department on Aging in partnership with local Area Agencies on Aging. Meals are delivered directly to participants’ homes and meet federal nutritional guidelines.
Eligibility is determined based on the need for meal support. Participants are not required to meet income qualifications.
