House Democrats last week introduced HB 2827, a bill that would impose new regulations on Illinois homeschool families. The proposed legislation would require homeschool families to submit an educational portfolio for approval by public schools and mandate the surrender of private information to the State Board of Education.
Supporters of homeschooling argue that these measures represent significant intrusions into the lives of thousands of Illinois families who have chosen to educate their children at home.
Rep. Dan Swanson (R-Alpha) said, "Home school parents should be able to teach their children free of burdensome government overreach. " He emphasized that his office has heard from many constituents opposing HB4217.
Rep. Joe Sosnowski (R-Rockford) also voiced his concerns, stating, "This bill places unnecessary restrictions on homeschool families and undermines parental rights. "
Opponents of the bill are urging residents to sign a petition against HB 2827. The petition aims to protect the freedom of Illinois families in choosing their child's educational path.
