Coaler Pitcher Collaborates with Wilson to Design Meaningful Mitt
Apr 3, 2025
Coaler pitcher and first baseman Dougie Bedinger has partnered with Wilson Sporting Goods to design a mitt that carries significant meaning. Despite facing numerous challenges in his 15 years, including undergoing three life- saving surgeries as an infant and living with autism, Dougie embodies determination, teamwork, courage, and integrity.
Doctors had told his family he would never participate in sports. However, Dougie's relentless hard work and determination have proven otherwise. He is now a left-handed pitcher and first baseman for the Coalers Freshman and Frosh/Soph Baseball Teams.
"He inspires me to be better as a coach, parent, teacher, and person," said his coach Greg Wills. "I am definitely a better person for having had that privilege. "
His teacher Melissa George echoed similar sentiments: "Dougie has truly inspired me to be a better teacher and version of myself by sharing his ability to shatter overwhelming odds while maintaining his polite and positive attitude. "
In observance of World Autism Awareness Month and World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, Dougie is making a global impact through baseball. Wilson Sporting Goods Company teamed up with Autism Speaks to create the A2000 Love the Moment collection—an array of baseball and softball gloves promoting inclusion and acceptance.
Dougie designed the new first baseman's mitt—the first ever offered in this collection—as well as a pitcher's glove. "Dougie's coupling with Wilson truly embodies the grit to overcome challenges while giving back to others," George noted.
The partnership arose when Dougie requested a first baseman’s glove from the collection. With none available, his mother reached out to Wilson Sporting Goods. This led to an invitation for Dougie to design one himself.
Accompanied by his parents Doug and Mary Bedinger along with sister Bailee, Dougie visited Wilson headquarters to collaborate on the mitt design. His creation features signature blue leather with an ombre pattern and white trim.
The designed mitts are now available for purchase online at Wilson , with a percentage of sales going directly to Autism Speaks.
"Dougie is using his personal life experience to show that no matter what the situation is, hard work, dedication, and support can help overcome many obstacles," said Coal City Superintendent Chris Spencer.
Both mitts are customized with Dougie's initials, jersey number, and a bright pink cross.
"The Bedinger Family is such a phenomenal example that anything is possible with a strong support system," added George. "It has been both an honor and a privilege to be part of Dougie's incredible journey. "
