The City of Highland Park Natural Resources Commission held its regular meeting on Tuesday, during which the commission was expected to focus on considering amendments to the city's Ethics Guidelines, as well as discuss the impact of coal tar and other sealants polluting local stormwater.

The Ethics Guidelines were last updated in 2012. The proposed amendments would add details to the current rules for when a local government official must recuse themselves from weighing in on a proposal based on connections to the organization making the proposal. The proposed amendments also would require city councilors and any other official with influence on land-use matters to sign an organizational interest disclosure form that outlines all ties to local organizations to prevent any conflicts of interest.

The commission also was expected to hear a presentation on the effect of coal tar and other sealants on local stormwater. The toxicity of the sealants has been brought up by environmental organizations and local governments across the country in recent years, with some municipalities banning the substances.

The committee also was expected to continue work on the 2016 Environmental Movie Series.
