During National Ground Water Awareness Week March 7 to March 18, Lake County’s Health Department is offering discounted well water testing kits for residents.
The analysis fee, usually $18, will be provided at a discounted rate of $12. Consumers who own private wells can obtain supplies and instructions from one of 18 locations, including the department’s main offices at 3010 Grand Ave. in Waukegan, Lake County Central Permit Facility at 500 W. Winchester Road in Libertyville or any of the 16 township or municipal offices located throughout the county and listed on the Lake County website.
Consumers who prefer to have kits mailed to them can do so for $15 during this special promotion period.
The kits provide a sterile method for testing bacteria and nitrates in ground water. Residents are advised that all water samples must be brought to the Libertyville facility between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Results take approximately three days.
Health department officials will be available to perform the testing on site for homeowners who may be unable to collect the samples personally for a $56 fee.
The Lake County Health Department encourages all well owners to take advantage of the week-long National Ground Water Awareness event by participating in the testing.
Well owners should make sure they are testing their wells annually to ensure ground water health. The event is sponsored by the National Groundwater Association to deter waterborne illnesses.
