The Deerfield Police Department recently issued a warning to the community to beware of a nationwide phone scam.
Callers alleging to represent the International Revenue Service (IRS) use false names, phony identification data and rigged caller I.D. They try to convince potential victims that they must pay large sums of money or face arrest, deportation or suspension of their driver's licenses.
Police said the Deerfield community appears to have been heavily targeted earlier this month.
They also cautioned citizens to never provide any personal information via telephone to any caller claiming to be from the IRS. Additionally, police said that consumers should not make any payments over the phone to such parties.
The police department provided the following link for additional information, urging all Deerfield residents to share it with friends and family: www.irs.gov/uac/Tax-Scams-Consumer-Alerts.
