Highland Park sounds off on nuisance noise, requests public input

Noise nuisance pillow

To draw a line between normal noise and what is considered a nuisance, Highland Park is soliciting public comment on a proposal to amend its noise ordinance.

Any residents who are bothered by blares or disturbed by dins are encouraged to give a shout-out to the city manager’s office, which welcomes feedback pertaining to possible modifications or other considerations.

Current city municipal code deems noises that disturb or breaks the rest, sleep or quiet of individuals after 7 p.m. any day of the week to be potentially considered a public nuisance.

Now the city is considering a time frame of 10 p.m. on weekends — when the following day is Saturday, Sunday or a legal holiday — and 8 p.m. on weeknights -- when the following day is Monday through Friday -- to implement its guidelines.

By comparison, neighboring jurisdictions generally deem any time after 10 p.m. on weekdays and 11 p.m. on weekends to be “Quiet Hours.”

An update will be provided at the Committee of the Whole Meeting on March 7. The city will retain the contact information of individuals who respond to this invitation for feedback and advise them when formal modifications will be considered by the council.
