A proposed site plan and landscape proposal for a key village amenity commanded the attention of the Vernon Hills Committee of the Whole at its March 1 meeting.

The Village’s Planning & Zoning Commission reported recommendations regarding a proposed site and landscape plan, with a special use permit, for the expansion of the Delores C. Sullivan Community Center, which is located in a district zoned for “conservation and open space.”

The community center, located at 635 N. Aspen Drive, serves the community as the heart of its Park District, hosting administrative personnel alongside a majority of the Park District’s programs.

The center is named for the Vernon Hills' citizen who was essentially responsible for founding the Village’s Park District in 1973; now, the district houses hundreds of acres of parkland and waters throughout Vernon Hills, offering a natural habitat plus sports facilities and festival grounds.

Within the building on the 1.5-acre site are fitness center, gymnasium, aerobics and cardiovascular rooms as well as a preschool. The Sullivan Center also has a large community room available for rent for activities or events.

The heart of the Park District continues to reside in the Dolores C. Sullivan Community Center as the Park District continues to pursue plans for expansion.

The Committee of the Whole also discussed parking options for seniors at Village Hall and budget reviews.
