Grayslake residents have an opportunity to dispose of household chemical wastes at a collection event on Saturday, April 30.
Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) will be accepting items from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Antioch Public Works Department facility located at 796 Holbek Drive and Depot Road.
SWALCO will accept aerosols, antifreeze and motor oil, lithium and rechargeable batteries, medicines and supplements for humans and pets and other household chemical wastes. Oil-based paints, paint removers, furniture strippers and varnishes will also be accepted.
The event will not accept DEA-controlled substances, latex paint, lead-acid and alkaline batteries, fire extinguishers and tires. Smoke detectors and household electronics will also not be accepted. And while gasoline and kerosene will be accepted, propane tanks are unacceptable.
The event is specifically for the disposal of household chemicals; construction debris, business waste and farm chemicals will also not be accepted.
The items collected will be sent to IEPA-approved recycling and reuse facilities. By recycling household chemical wastes, residents help prevent the contamination of groundwater.
