The city of Highwood shared the two Household Chemical Waste (HCW) Public Drop Off events posted in the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) newsletter last week.

The first event was held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 11. The second will take place Monday, Feb. 27, at the SWALCO facility, 1311 N. Estes St., Gurnee.

An appointment is required to drop off household chemicals. To schedule an appointment for the upcoming event, go to the SWALCO website. An email confirmation will be sent out when an appointment is successfully booked. Save a copy of the email.

HCW incorporates a variety of household chemicals, including automotive and petroleum-based products, CFL bulbs, cleaning products, garden chemicals, oil-based paints and varnishes, and medications. If flushed, poured down the drain or placed in the trash, these products can contaminate ground water or the landfill.

Once in a landfill, the chemicals may leach into the soil and pollute the surrounding land and groundwater.

The HCW program sends the chemical waste to Illinois Environmental Protection Agency-approved recycling and reuse facilities.

This free program accepts only household waste; business waste is not eligible for the event.
