Village of North Barrington Environmental and Health Commission met April 4.

Here is the minutes provided by the Commission:

1.Call to Order, Roll Call

At 7:05 p.m. Chairman Patty Kalinowski called the meeting to order and Elia Torres called the roll:

2.Approval of Minutes from the March 7, 2017 Environmental and Health Commission meeting

The Minutes of the March 7, 2017 Environmental and Health (“E&H”) meeting were made available to the commission members.

Motion: Laurie Cameron moved to approve the Minutes of the March 7, 2017 E&H meeting; seconded by Vice Chair Linda Aylward.

Discussion: There was no discussion.

Vote on Motion: The voice vote was unanimous in favor.

Chairman Kalinowski declared the Minutes of the March 7, 2017 E&H meeting approved and put on file.

3.Public Comment

There was no public comment.

4. Discuss Spring Green Up event-pre-event schedule, supplies, park layout, activity plan, presentations, and clean up

Chairman Kalinowski went over the list of supplies that has been purchased for the Spring event. She stated she also purchased some books to read to the children who attend, and prizes to possibly raffle out. Ms. Lawlor noted that she would purchase the bagels for the bird feeder event closer to the date of the event.

Ms. Ritschel stated that she would bring popcorn and possibly lemonade to put in the drink dispensers used by the PRC. She also agreed to bring a form of music.

Ms. Allman informed the E&H that the Biltmore Country Club would be donating a Black Gum tree to be planted at Eton Park in honor of Arbor Day. She stated that a flyer is being mailed within the next week with information about Arbor Day, the 50/50 tree program, and the Spring event. She explained that the scouts will also be in attendance. She indicated that she will be giving out Oak seedlings. Ms. Allman informed the E&H that, Dan Heth, a representative from SavATree would be attending as well, and giving out White Pine seedlings.

Chairman Kalinowski suggested setting up stations with one volunteer at each station for all the activities at the event.

Ms. Aylward noted that Prairieland Disposal will be in attendance, and will be talking about food scrap recycling. She indicated that they will also be offering food scrap recycling sign up for residents interested in subscribing to the program. She mentioned that there will be a truck/container for the electronics recycling being offered at the event.

Members agreed to meet at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 22nd to setup for the event at Eton Park.

Ms. Lawlor indicated that the Spring event flyer will be in the North Barrington’s School Parent Teacher Association newsletter, as well at the fourth grade newsletter. She stated that she would inquire about whether the Wynstone Property Association Manager would allow the flyer to be included in the Wynstone Subdivision newsletter.

Ms. Ritschel mentioned that new signs were ordered for the Spring event. It was noted that Chairman Kalinowski would place the signs out in the Village for the event.

Ms. Cameron stated that she would purchase the plastic knives or utensils for the birdfeeder project.

Some members discussed meeting at the Village Hall on Monday, April 11th at 1:45 p.m. to prepare the plastic bottles for the birdfeeder project.

5. Discuss the Flint Creek Watershed presentation from 3/14, "What's in the Creek?"

Chairman Kalinowski stated that she attended the Flint Creek Watershed presentation on March 14th. She noted that Ms., Lawlor, Ms. Aylward, two Village residents, and Village Trustee, Jan Sauer, were also in attendance. Chairman Kalinowski mentioned that Mike Adam, Lake County Population Health Services, spoke regarding suds in Flint Creek. She stated that Mr. Adam volunteered to assist the Village in possibly discovering the cause of suds in the portion of Flint Creek located in the Village. She indicated that while walking along Flint Creek she was able to speak to the Village Engineer, Al Stefan, and he stated that in some cases suds in the creek may be a good indicator that run off from septic systems is entering the creek.

6. April Awareness of Lyme Disease and West Nile Virus, and Arbor Day

Chairman Kalinowski stated that Mr. Adams spoke about mosquitos with the West Nile Virus and the risks of ticks. She noted that informational cards were handed out regarding ticks, and that she would attempt to acquire more cards to hand out to residents at the Spring event.

Trustee Boland explained that mosquito spraying is only effective for a radius of approximately 50 feet, and is only effective on the adult female mosquito in the air.

Chairman Kalinowski stated that she spoke to Tom Vanderpoel, Citizens for Conservation, and discussed clearing the fallen trees on Flint Creek. She indicated that Citizens for Conservation is planning to clear fallen trees from their property along Flint Creek.

7.Old Business/New Business

Ms. Allman mentioned that a scout approached her inquiring about whether the Village had any projects that the scout could assist in, which would qualify as an Eagle Scout project.

Chairman Kalinowski stated that she read an article in the Daily Herald regarding dead Ash Trees in Libertyville due to Ash Borer disease. She explained that the Village of Libertyville spent approximately $850,000 since 2011 to remove 2,966 Ash Trees.

8.Adjournment

Motion: Laurie Cameron moved the Meeting be adjourned; seconded by Marilyn Lawlor.

Discussion: There was no discussion.

Vote on Motion: The voice vote was unanimous in favor.

At 8:06 p.m. Chairman Patty Kalinowski declared the meeting adjourned.
