Rep. Nick Sauer (R-Lake Barrington) and 39 of his fellow representatives have sent a letter to Attorney General Lisa Madigan asking her require the General Assembly to pass a revenue estimate before budget legislation.
“Since the budget impasse began, almost no one has mentioned a critical aspect to resolving the issue, the need for a revenue estimate,” Sauer said in a press release. “Without an official revenue estimate that defines how much the state can legally appropriate, we cannot move forward. Due this reality, the Attorney General needs to use her legal authority to represent the people and enforce the obligation of the General Assembly to adopt a revenue estimate and appropriate a balanced budget based on that estimate.”
The Illinois Constitution and the Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability Act require the General Assembly to adopt a revenue estimate in order to pass a balanced budget.

“We have ten days left in the regular legislative session to craft a solution which provides stability to those who care for our most vulnerable, job creator, schools and taxpayers,” Sauer said in the release. “The legal precedent exists for the Attorney General to step in and she has expressed opinion that supports the legal requirements for the revenue estimate. Now is the time to act, I hope she will use her authority as soon as possible.”
