Highland Park FD responds to 34 fires in 2016

Highland Park Fire Department responded to 52 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Lake County Gazette.

The calls in Highland Park included 34 fires - 17 structure fires, 10 vehicle fires and six other fires. The fire department also responded to one call for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $357,326 in fire loss - or about $10,510 per fire.

The department also received one false call, including 17 malicious calls and 1 other false calls.

The Highland Park Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 49 active employees and 59 retired or inactive employees, was $2,555,232 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $75,154 for every fire in 2016.
