Greater Round Lake FPD responds to 143 fires in 2016

Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded to 482 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Lake County Gazette.

The calls in Greater Round Lake included 143 fires - 95 structure fires, eight vehicle fires and 36 other fires. The fire department also responded to four calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,822,124 in fire loss - or about $12,742 per fire.

The department also received 339 false calls, including 10 malicious calls and 329 other false calls.

The calls resulted in two civilian fire-related injuries. Additionally, two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents and one was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Greater Round Lake FPD Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 36 active employees and 10 retired or inactive employees, was $706,116 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $4,938 for every fire in 2016.
