Gurnee Park District issued the following announcement on July 16.
| GO GURNEE started in 2016 and in 2017 the GO GURNEE Walking Club put their best foot forward to enhance efforts, promote wellness and keep people moving! Today, the group gets together every Saturday to enjoy a local 30-minute walk. Members can walk longer or shorter depending on their preference. Linda Brogren is a volunteer that continues to give her time. Before walking club meets, Linda researches each location, provides path information and gives directions. I truly enjoy when she creates maps on the day of. This way, you're able to walk at your own pace or enjoy the path again at another time.
Here are a few reasons why I decided to join the GO GURNEE Walking Club and continue to stay active!
1) Convenient locations
Walks are typically scheduled throughout Lake County or within a half hour drive. As a 12 year Gurnee resident, I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the variety of locations and pathways. In Gurnee, I enjoy the Des Plaines River Trail, Hunt Club Park and Viking Park paths. My favorite Walking Club locations so far have been Hastings Lake Forest Preserve in Lake Villa, Independence Grove in Libertyville and Waukegan's lake front path.
2) GO at your own pace, in your own time
Schedules are shared with Walking Club members via email, on Gurnee Park District's website and on GO GURNEE's Facebook page. All are welcome to attend. I have scheduled out Saturday mornings to include my Walking Club walk. Should I have a prior commitment or family gathering, it's easy to join back up the following Saturday. The scheduled thirty minutes runs on time. There are opportunities to walk more or less depending on each walker's preference. Some walk longer or shorter.
3) Stay active all four seasons
Weather in the Midwest is unpredictable. Rain, snow, sleet or heat. Name it, we got it.The Walking Club is extremely reliable and committed to opportunities to continue to stay active. Outdoor walks take place each season, even winter. Walking Club members dress appropriately and enjoy their time. If the Walking Club walk is cancelled, members can walk inside at a variety of Gurnee locations, but Gurnee Park District provides free access to Hunt Club Park Community Center's indoor walking track, while wearing a GO GURNEE t-shirt.
4) Meet new people and enjoy new experiences
As a retiree, I enjoy volunteering and staying active. By being involved at my church, I was introduced to the Walking Club. It's a great way to exercise and I have met new people with common interests along the way.
Click here to join. You do not need to come to every Saturday, just attend what meets your schedule. Join to start receiving a schedule of upcoming walks and GO GURNEE T-Shirt. You can also learn more at facebook.com/GOGURNEE.
