Republican Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran, who has held the office since 2006, was recently voted out.
On election night, the votes seemed to be in favor of Curran, who was holding a 754 vote lead over his Democrat opponent, John Idleburg. However, Idleburg was able to gain a 137 vote advantage in the days following the election, according to Daily Herald.
Curran congratulated his opponent and showed appreciation to Lake County residents for allowing him to serve them.
"Thank you for 12 years as Lake County Illinois Sheriff," Curran said in a Facebook post.
In addition to Curran losing to a Democrat, Republicans also lost their advantage in Lake County as Democratic Party candidates won nine of the 14 county board seats in the midterm election, resulting in a 12-9 lead over the GOP.
Curran was elected as Lake County Sheriff in 2006 as a Democrat but changed his party affiliation to Republican in 2008.
