The Village of Vernon Hills is continuing its partnership with American Legion Vernon Post 1247 to recognize local service members through the Military Banners Program. The initiative displays banners on street light poles throughout the village, honoring both current and veteran members of the armed forces.

Residents are encouraged to nominate themselves or others for recognition in this free program. Applications can be found on the Village website, which also provides further details and a list of individuals who have already been honored.

One example highlighted by the program is Corporal Bernie Parker, a World War II veteran who served in the South Pacific. Parker, now over 100 years old, was among 22 residents recognized with a banner in 2025.

According to organizers, "If you or someone you know is a current or veteran service member, please consider recognizing them through this free Military Banners program." They urge community members to visit the Military Banners webpage and complete an application to help expand the list of honorees.

For more information about the program and how to participate, interested parties can refer to resources provided by both American Legion Vernon Post 1247 and the Village of Vernon Hills.
