Rep. Bob Morgan's (D-Deerfield) bill that would place insurance rates under state government scrutiny has picked up 16 co-sponsors since its introduction Jan. 18, despite potentially being an example of government waste.
House Bill 0815, the Freedom from Insurance Increases Act, would create a review board to “ensure insurance rates are reasonable and justified,” according to the Illinois General Assembly’s website. The proposal not only establishes the board’s composition and methods of appointment, but also requires carriers to submit their rates to the board for approval.
The law would also require this newly created board to report on its activity each year to the state legislature.
After Morgan filed the bill, Reps. Linda Chapa LaVia and Jonathan Carroll signed on Jan. 29, a week after the first reading. Once the bill reached the Insurance Committee, Reps. Anna Moeller, Theresa Mah, Sara Feigenholtz, Lamont J. Robinson Jr., Gregory Harris, Jennifer Gong-Gershowitz, Maurice A. West II, Emanuel Chris Welch, Robyn Gabel, Deb Conroy, Debbie Meyers-Martin, Mary Edly-Allen, Karina Villa and Celina Villanueva became co-sponsors.
HB 0815 currently sits in the Health Insurance Subcommittee.
