ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 62: Yingling Cracks Down On Rising Insulin Costs with New Legislation

62

Illinois State House District 62 issued the following announcement on Nov. 22

To increase access to affordable healthcare for Illinois residents, state Rep. Sam Yingling, D-Grayslake, is backing new legislation that would cap insulin costs for diabetics.

“Over 1.3 million adults in Illinois rely on insulin to maintain their heath and lives,” Yingling said. “There are countless people who have to ration insulin or even skip doses because they cannot afford to keep up with the rising costs, putting their lives in jeopardy. It’s imperative that this bill become law.”

Yingling is supporting Senate Bill 667, with aims to cap insulin co-pays at $100 per month. This bill comes to address the extreme spike in insulin prices between 2002 and 2013, as the American Diabetes Association reports that insulin has spiked over 300% since 2002 and has increased by roughly 64% from 2014 until now. Yingling is committed to finding solutions that make healthcare for affordable for middle-class families to reduce costs and ultimately, save lives.

“Pharmaceutical companies are preying on diabetics who will die without their medication,” Yingling said. “It’s price gouging, and we need to crack down on these skyrocketing costs to build a stronger Illinois for everyone.”
