Illinois state Sen. Dan McConchie (R-Hawthorn Woods) joined a bipartisan group of legislators Thursday in a push for fair mapping to Illinois politics.
Lawmakers from both parties, along with representatives from several community organizations, held a press conference to share their support for fair maps and their commitment to end gerrymandering. McConchie said that to end gerrymandering would be a strong start in the fight against corruption.
"I want to zero in on the headlines that we’ve seen lately that have been about corruption and it's exactly what was just mentioned," McConchie said. "When legislators pick their own constituents instead of the voters having the ability to, through regular elections, to be able to choose their own leaders, we end up in a circumstance where it is natural for lawmakers to decide to act out of what is appropriate and proper," McConchie said. "If you want to rule out corruption, this is where we start."
McConchie said he would do everything in his power to make sure fair maps legislation would make it through the General Assembly.
